This grand old 1975 primitive chestnut mare is the common ancestor that all of Ernie Hammrich's recent day Curly horses trace back to. If purer is better, this one is great. According to Ernie, Slim Berndt's Curly Horses were all curly, all flaxen or primitive (silver-maned) chestnut, and they came from Slim Berndt, who got all his from the Sioux gentleman, Eli Bad Warrior and family, who lived on the reservation near Ernie. This mare is the dam of Ernie's famous *Bad Warrior stallion, named after Eli. Still living but retired, "Oma" resides at Glady Franz's Windreaper Curly Ranch, where she is hand fed and pampered.

Oma, retired in Kansas w/ last foal: *Jimadee; in 2002

"I just fed Oma her afternoon ration and she is chowing down like one hungry Mama. My heart soars, when I find her at her feeding station. I know that one day, she won't be there, and I dread, even the thought of that. Donna, you know that I love that mare, just as I know that you, too, love her. She is a legend, a beginning, and a continuance, of the Curly Horse breed. Her contributions are legendary, I believe. Thanks for entrusting her into our care. Know, that she knows, that she is indeed loved! It is a relationship, that I will carry with me, to my grave. Thanks so much, Donna! My goal, is to provide her with an adequate resting place, that will give Curly Horses some of the respect and publicity, they deserve. Maybe on our front lawn?  ; )

With Love & Respect!"  ~ Glady, September 2005
